About The BVI
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a stunning Caribbean archipelago made up of about 60 islands, cays, and islets, located east of Puerto Rico. It is a British Overseas Territory, known for its pristine beaches, sailing culture, and rich history.
Geography & Climate
The four main islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke.
The capital, Road Town, is located on Tortola, the largest and most populated island.
The BVI has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round and a dry and wet season. The islands are famous for their world-class sailing conditions, making them a top destination for yachting and regattas.
History & Culture
Originally inhabited by the Arawak and Carib Indians, the islands were later colonized by the Dutch and then taken over by the British in the 17th century.
African heritage plays a major role in BVI culture, influenced by the history of the transatlantic slave trade.
The culture is reflected in music (fungi, reggae, calypso), festivals (Emancipation Festival), and cuisine (fish & fungi, Johnny cakes, conch dishes).
Economy & Tourism
The BVI is one of the worldโs leading offshore financial centers, known for its business-friendly environment.
Tourism is a major economic driver, with visitors drawn to sailing, diving (RMS Rhone shipwreck), and luxury resorts.
